PLASTER MOULDINGS
Cornicing
What is cornicing?
Cornicing is a type of horizontal plaster moulding that runs horizontally along the top edge of a wall where it meets the ceiling to hide the join. Often seen in original Victorian and Georgian properties, it adds a feature of interest into a room and a feel of elegance. Unlike some decorative features, which can go out of fashion, plaster cornice is a timeless feature.
Coving on the other hand is mainly a more simple ‘C’ shape and is usually bought off the shelf. Coving became popular post-war as a cheaper alternative to cornice, whilst still adding a feature to the room.

How do we make cornice?
When making cornice, we use casting plaster and timber laths wrapped in hessian to provide strength and stability. If your property has existing cornice that has been damaged or you would like to extend or replicate, we can take a mould from the existing cornice to replicate the design.
Whether you would like a simple cornice or something more ornate, we are more than happy to help! We can make cornice to your own specification or to a bespoke design if required.
Which style of cornicing should I choose?
If you want to add new cornice to your room, we will be happy to recommend styles consistent with the period and style of the building in order to provide a seamless finish.
On Pinterest there are plenty of images of completed rooms with various types of cornice. This can be helpful in getting an idea of how cornice can enhance a room.
